It's been ages since I first saw the movie. Now that I've seen it again I was surprised to find it so boring. Although the movie managed to correct/improve on many of Andy Weir's suppositions in the book, the movie failed to provide the audience with reasons for Mark Watney's/NASA's actions. And the ending ... give me a break!!!

Just read the book again.
Really good despite the fact that the math and much of the physics continues to escape me. Regardless, I got the drift. Enjoyed the movie as well.
In fact, I happened to be in Jordan ( Wadi Rum) after the movie came out and stood where Damon stood when he finally made it to the MAV. I could only imagine, which is the whole point isn’t it.
The negative reviews in this thread are rather laughable in hindsight.

One problem with the movie is food grown in Martian soil absorbs the perchlorates. Perchlorates are formed in lightning strikes in the severe dust storms on Mars.
