Not Another Lesbian Movie

By Igotall3
This is not a lesbian film, and I am sad to see this excellent movie receive several one star reviews for disappointing those seeking a lesbian movie. It's not a lesbian movie because, as some reviewers have pointed out, there's more to being a lesbian than two women having sex. Kissing Jessica Stein explores the complexity of human sexuality, focusing on the person rather than gender. The worst it can be called is ostentatious, but I would maintain it's witty and brave. Its themes can apply to any audience member: LGBTQ, straight, etc. Should I let my gay identity stop me from exploring a relationship with a woman if I really like her? Is sexuality a matter of gender? love? family? Kissing Jessica Stein explores these questions through a lovely story. Check it out.
Was this written by a man?

This movie just makes lesbian's an even bigger joke than they haved to be. Was this written by a man? Seems like it.
This movie made me feel all happy all over.

This movie is simultaneously sweet and smart. Jessica is so easy to love, unless you actually have to live with her. I have great hopes for her yet.
This again?

The movie shows nothing about lesbianism or lesbian culture, and *definitely* nothing about self-discovery, like all these other reviewers are saying, as no one's identity ever actually changes in the end. It's a trifling story about a straight girl who out tried women because she ran out of options. It's an insult to lesbianism. As has been so typical of lesbian-themed plotlines in the past sixty years, heterosexuality triumphs in the end so as not to make a mainstream audience feel uncomfortable by challenging the dominant ideology. In fact, the only good thing I can say about it is that I absolutely adore Scott Cohen as an actor.
Brilliant

This is as clever a screenplay as I've seen. It's cute to see Westfeldt and John Hamm (pre his Mad Men days) together - albeit briefly. I am even willing to overlook the tragic cliche of her character ending up with a man in the end because the nuances are handled so well. Please see this movie and make your friends do the same. The soundtrack is fantastic and the acting is just pretty darn good. Remember, sexy ugly is a good thing.
Enjoyable, funny, and honest

I saw this at the LA Film Festival at its first showing, with a giant audience, and it won the audience award. It was sweet, funny, insightful, and very, very witty. Jennifer Westfeldt recently had a series I loved (about being pregnant) that was really sharply funny, but it hasn't continued, unfortunately. My favorite part was Scott Cohen, whose character is transformed by seeing his friend explore her entire self and her freedom, and get back in touch with her soul. He's one sexy beast. I love his rooftop champagne guzzling near the end, very funny.
good movie
