Description

This routine comedy is about a series of misadventures during a family vacation at the beach and stars John Candy (who died of a heart attack while filming in Mexico in 1994) as John Chester and Karen Austin as his long-suffering wife Sandy. When the family leave for what turns out to be a pretty decrepit shack on a public beach, Jack eventually locks horns with the owner of this dubious piece of real estate, and their conflict terminates in a boat race in which Jack and his motley crew are at first glance, and even second, no match for the others in the race. In the meantime, there are plenty of skits with Jack dressed as anything from an ample, unintentional likeness of a geisha to the normal tourist dude in a Hawaiian shirt. His wife and daughter tackle their own problems, related to sex in one way or another, mostly another.

Is this John’s best movie? No, not even close. But it does showcase how much he could carry a movie on his back and make you laugh and feel good at the same time. He was a kind, generous and brilliant man, and every time i see him on screen, it feels like being with an old friend. A friend who can always make you laugh and smile. Like always, he does that here too.

John Candy is heart tuggingly wonderful as the harried dad trying desperately to show his family a good time on vacation. If you haven't seen this film, and you: 1. Remember disastrous vacations as a kid, 2. Love your dad, or, 3. Love John Candy, this is a must see movie. If you like 'Captain Ron' or 'Overboard,' movies made in the same vein, give this one a chance. It's hilarious. As for the professional reviewers who hated it -- I can only say this: You were never a kid, you're too young to remember how amazing John Candy was, or you really need to find another way to make a living.

I have loved this movie for years and have been wanting it really bad. I was excited to see it on iTunes, so I could have it instantly! John Candy is hilarious. I don't remember when I last saw this movie, so I am VERY excited. If you like movies from the 80's, you can't go wrong with Summer Rental.

Ad old as this movie is, it still makes me laugh. Candy was so comical, and his comedic timing is displayed here perfectly. Worth watching.
