Bending over backwards

This simplistic WWII movie is told through the point of view of the Japanese, fighting against our country – the United States. As I seem to recall, the Japanese were the aggressors during the Second World War which they started over a TRADE dispute! That’s why they bombed Pearl Harbor. The Japanese were allied with Adolf Hitler! They were far too often savagely brutal and refused to surrender although their defeat was obvious.
Young Japanese men were naturally impacted. While I can feel for them as individuals being caught up in a war they didn’t themselves start, this film undervalues the lives of our own soldiers by trying to be politically correct.
The United States responded in self-defense.
What a great movie

Tries to Make Savage War Criminals Look Noble

Thanks, but NO thanks! The Japanese Imperial Army was as savage, as the Nazi war machine. The Japanese killed millions of civilians throughout Asia, and this movie overlooks that fact.
Boring

I found this movie to be slow and subdued — not at all what I expect from a war movie. For the most part, it’s a series of dimly lit scenes in which the Japanese move around in a cloud of hopeless resignation, reflecting on the past in ways that are fairly obviously intended to make the viewer feel compassion for them as fellow human beings. And that’s about it. There is very little plot and no historical treatment of the Battle of Iwo Jima. All in all, it's a pretty boring movie.
Movie’s Great, but No Extras

The movie is 5 Stars no doubt, but the download doesn’t have any extras at all. A bit pricey for just the film.
Great film showing complex story

First, this is a great job of storytelling by the writers. You develop real connections with the characters and empathy for some of them. The production quality is superb, although the Dolby 2.1 sound is a reminder iTunes needs to offer more, especially for an audio company. Letters from IJ does an effective job of illuminating a part of the war not normally seen in the films about WWII. However... I was prompted to write this review by some of the comments from reviewers praising Japanese honor and bravery as being the real motivation for fighting. Let's not forget of the dangerous nationalism that push the Japanese populous into horrific aggression and war crimes which trumped the Nazis. Yes, they were worse. This film is a good reminder that not all Japanese were monsters, but we should not forget that Japanese militarism was a dangerous cancer on the world just a short 70 years ago.
Letters From Iwo Jima 🇯🇵

An excellent film that provides a different perspective to the battle at Iwo Jima. It presents a realistic picture of the Japanese soldiers, who like the American soldiers, left their homes and families to fight for their country. The cast is very talented. The cinematography and musical score are beautifully done. Excellent job by Clint Eastwood and company. Unfortunately, with about 45 minutes left received error message cannot load video. Did not see the conclusion. Hoping it will be on Netflix soon.
Re-rented it to view the conclusion. So glad that I did. Again, an excellent film!
Not Clint Eastwood's Best, sorry!

This film dragged on and on, "Flags of our Fathers" was a better film.
