Description

James Stewart, Farley Granger and John Dall star in this macabre spellbinder, which was inspired by a real-life case of murder. Two thrill-seeking friends (Granger and Dall) strangle a classmate and then hold a party for their victim's family and friends, serving refreshments on a buffet table fashioned from a trunk containing the lifeless body. When dinner conversation revolves around talk of the 'perfect murder', their former teacher (Stewart) becomes increasingly suspicious that his students have turned his intellectual theories into brutal reality.

  • Least Liked Hitchcock Film

While I do admit that there were some things to like about the film, the mystery, the dialogue, no modern day cursing, no sex & harsh violence, I did not like the odd story (they used to call it "queer" back then); no one in their right mind would have committed such a murder & then leave the evidence so close. And I don't get the iTunes & others, "implicict homosexual" description of the main characters. Sure, one of them was an actual 'gay' man back then and not many watching were aware of it, but I don't see that the characters are that way for sure. It seemed to me like a thrill kill or jealous kill, since the victim was in a serious relationship with a woman, and they found him a misfit or whatever that needed to be done away with. Anyway, many other Hitchcock films out there that I do like and I have purchased on here, nearly all of them at a very good sale price, under $10.

It was terrific when I saw it in 1947 or 1948, whenever it was first released, and it still works. No special effects, no chase scenes, just dialog, character development and plot. How refreshing. And more great directing by Hitchcock.

It's supposed to be like that. The director's job is not to say "cut" it's to DIRECT the actors and visuals to a way he enjoys. The reason it was done like this is because it was originally a play, and at least the style works.

The gimmick was to do the whole movie in one take. It shows. Boring, long, tedious. A director's job is to say, "Cut!"

This movie was made in 1948 and despite its age it still holds up with brilliant acting and revolutionary directing. The coldness of the character Brandon is chilling yet actor John Dall plays him with a sense of charisma and sly humor. James Stewart is great as the sarcastic and cynical Rupert as well. But it is Alfred Hitchcock's unconventional directing style that is the real shows topper. The scene where the housekeeper almost finds out the secret is shot with such subtlety that before you know it you are on the edge of your seat! Hitchcock had a brilliant way of doing just that. Great film, I highly recommend this sleeper thriller!

Well thought out, well scripted, and intelligent. I love how the Professors arguemnt is thrown back in his face. I was a little surprised that he didnt feel somewhat responsible since he taught the murderes their philosophy. I think it lends to some great discussion on many philosophical and sociological topics and ideals

Okay...so it's a great movie. But what do you expect from Hitch? Here's the tremendous value of Rope: take a look at how long the scenes are without a cut. He was incredibly innovative in this film. It was done almost as a stage play but with you on the stage. Wonderful use of lighting in the background and it feels like a city is outside that window. Notice the very long scene where even the cut is hidden; character walks "into" the camera (fades to black) only to come out the other side from black. This is not only Hitch at his best, it's Stewart at his best as well. What a team!
