A hardscrabble downer

This film is done well, but it's basically a downer. If you're into a hilbilly mystery about people trying to eak out an existence, this is the film for you. Well made, well acted, but not for me.
Surprisingly good drama

I was surpised with this movie. Descent story with a great cast and really good acting. Very solid filmmaking. I'm not a huge fan of Jennifer Lawrence, but she did an excellent job in this movie, probably her best movie in my opinion.

I was born, raised, & live in the Missouri Ozarks. This movie is a brilliant representation of the despair that methamphetamine has brought to our region. Ree Dolly (Jennifer Lawrence) could be a number of young women in our communities, as could the rest of the characters. Suburbanites could scarcely believe the misery & squalor in which these people live. Our homicide rate per capita is comparable to cities & it is almost entirely meth heads killing other meth heads.
As good as it is; the book is better. The author, Daniel Woodrell, lives about an hour from me. We met through a mutual friend & he told me he was pleased with movie adaptation, so I guess that's the real measure in that regard.
Amazingly relatable lead character

Before she was known as the star of "The Hunger Games," Lawrence gave a much more realistic and heartfelt portrayal of a tenacious teenage girl in Appalachia who is forced to raise a family of three solo, where meth cooking is the new bootlegging. The director did an amazing job of making Ree Dolly a relatable character who is instantly relatable even to those of us who fortunately never had to live in her circumstances. The actors portraying the violent, secretive, meth-addicted family members were very believable in terms of motivation (loyalty, cruelty, tenacity). See this film at least once!

May be the worst movie I have ever seen. I will never get that hour and a half of my life back. This movie goes nowhere and has no plot.
An intriguing trailer doesn’t always mean a great movie.

This is a horrible movie! So painfully boring. I even skipped parts because I was bored out of my mind. I only kept watching cause I wanted something to happen, nothing ever did. I don’t even understand what happened if anything. I couldn’t tell where the climax was. Nothing happened! So slow. Don’t get me wrong I like depressing movies but I’ve got to feel it. You know? Instead of anticipating wait will happen next, I stared at my computer screen thinking I’ve just wasted 3 dollars on a movie that for sure doesn’t deserve 94%.
Don’t be fooled by the trailer and positive reviews, like I was.

Being "a Southerner", I cringe when I hear how Hollywood portrays people from the South...how we talk, dress, act, etc. But this movie is dead-on....especially in the portrayal of people from this region who succumb to meth production to the abandonment of their families, and good sense entirely. It's a cold, stark reality check most folks don't see if they aren't "from around here". Jennifer Lawrence is excellent and her accent is perfect, a little too perfect. But it just adds to the flavor. Loved this movie.
