A rare and intelligent drama that invites the viewer to speculate about the characters' lives rather than spell everything out for us the way most American films are made. The film maker never explicitly states what went on in the past. We are left guessing what emotional issues the father has: Aspergers disease perhaps?, or why the mother is so noncommittal, or why the rival professor is so hateful or the son so bitter. The ending provocatively requires the viewer to reach his or her own conclusions. Looking forward to many more fine films from Joseph Cedar.
Missing an ending

If you like movies that delve deeply into messed up family relationships then suddenly end with zero resolution, you'll like this. I had to rewind at the end to make sure that was actually the ending. It's like the plot developed and developed and at the conclusion your tv goes out. Great. Now what? Rotten tomatoes, you have failed me.

It was a wonderful, engaging movie that ended abruptly. It was like they had a script for a two hour movie, but ran out of money and were unable to film the final 15 minutes. Just imagine the film "The Fugitive" with the bad guys getting away at the end and Richard Kimble still on the run. There is no resolution in "Footnote."

Saw this at Telluride and was blown away.
Constant twisting of the knife in this immediately identifiable but weirdly universal family kept me glued to the screen. Unrelenting and unbelievably good, Footnote earned its Academy Award nomination and would have won in any year it wasn't up against A Separation (also amazing).
If you dig Woody Allen at his best or an Almodovar drama, this masterpiece is for you.
