Description

Based on Jules Verne’s nineteenth century novel of the same name, Journey to the Center of the Earth is a standout adventure saga and is considered one of the most entertaining adaptations in the science fiction genre. The film follows a Scottish professor, Oliver Lindenbrook, who accidentally discovers a map of sorts with directions on how to reach the center of the Earth through an Icelandic crater. When the professor looks to his colleague Alec McEwen to verify his discovery, Alec turns on him and the two engage in a race to see who will reach the center of the Earth first. Along the way lurk dangers such as kidnapping, death, sabotage, and attacks by giant prehistoric reptiles. Yet they also encounter such magnificent wonders as a glistening cavern of quartz crystals, luminescent algae, a forest of giant mushrooms, and the lost city of Atlantis. The professor and his nemesis Alec McEwan have discovered an uncharted new world, but the race goes on – who will make it to the center of the earth first?

This is one of the early Sci-Fi classics and it's the original version too! It's one of those flicks that was filmed in CinemaScope, a new format back in the day! Really glad that this movie is available and it looks like a great digital version based on all the comments I am reading here. Thanks for posting about the quality of this movie! Believe you can also purchase this on disc in a Blu-Ray format too! Sure wish it would go on sale here, but nope! I keep checking every week! Guess I need to get a part-time job and reload my account!

Much better thn the later version with Brenden Fraser maybe because the earler version depends less on flashy FX. Sure the dinosaurs in this one are lizards with "dinosaur" parts glued on, but so what. There's so much more story an character in this version.

Fortunately, unlike the cropped and grainy trailer provided, the is a sharp, clean print in actual Cinemascope, (not cropped to fit your screen "TV Vision".) Much better than the remake (offered on ITunes in a non 3D cropped version) Amazing performances by all concerned, especially James Mason with a wonderful score by the great Bernard Hermann, you won't be disappointed! Even some of the once spectacularly strong bass from the original sountrack has been retained. I wish all the movies offered on ITunes retained their original formatting like this movie does.

The first time I saw this movie was in November of 2016, and I fell in love with it. This movie gave me a sense of science and adventure, and now it is one of my favorite movies.

The best of the 50s/60s Jules Verne movies. Just the marvelous sets and Bermard Hermann's magnificent score would be enough to put it over the top, but James Mason is fabulous as Sir Oliver, and most of the rest of the cast does well, too. Even Pat Boone is sufferable. Yes, it takes too long to get rolling, but once it does it's great fun. You get the giant papier mache stone that inspired the opening of Raiders, and lizards dressed up as dinosaurs, and lost Atlantis, and volcanoes -- and those sets! Today they'd do it all in the computer. Great stuff.

I watched this movie as a young girl & fell in love with all the characters & was absolutely captivated with each minute of the show. I was young enough to be a little scared & couldn't wait for it to be on tv usually once a year. I bought it from I Tunes & will try not to watch it so much that I get tired of it. I saw the new version & thought it was really fun. But nothing beats the original. I loved the part when they shot up through the volcano. It has been my most favorite movie of all time. It had every thing one could ask for in a movie & all the characters were PERFECT !!!!!!!! What an adventure!!!!!!

On an old VHS containing old giant monster movie trailers I used to watch called Fantastic Dinosaurs of the Movies (1993) I saw a trailer for this movie. But, when I saw it back then I was originally indifferent. However, I recently saw this movie and I am surprised that I never bothered to watch it back then. Now that I got that out of the way, I must say that this movie is great! The story is great, the characters are great, and its one of the rare times which the slurposaur (the glued fin lizards used in place of dinosaurs) looks believable! I highly recommend this movie to anyone!
